Who Taught You That?! Sex, Culture, and the Stories We Tell featuring Gynogirl

What happens when culture, religion, shame, and a medical system that loves to say “it’s all in your head” collide with sexual health?

Dr. Sameena Rahman, the GynoGirl, joins Drs. Ashley Fuller and Meredith McClure for this episode of Labia Logic. These three docs get into the big stuff: pelvic pain, vulvar conditions, vaginismus, period shame, sexual dysfunction, and the very real ways women, especially women of color, are dismissed when they try to get help.

They also talk about Dr. Rahman’s upcoming book Brown Girls’ Disease: A Guide to Sexual Health and Empowerment Through a South Asian Lens, and unpack how cultural expectations, medical bias, religious messaging, and shame can shape the way patients experience their bodies and seek care.

Their conversation also covers why clinicians need to listen to the whole story, how vulvar disease can look different across skin tones, and why “just try harder” is not, in fact, a treatment plan.

So yes, we’re talking about vaginas, vulvas, bias, and Barbie movie pearl-clutching. As one does. Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that your body is not shameful, your pain is not imaginary, and saying the word “vagina” in public will not cause the earth to split open. Probably.
